Magnesium bromide is a white-coloured crystalline solid that is fairly soluble in polar solvents like water and ethanol. Let us read some uses of magnesium bromide in this article.
The industries that use magnesium bromide are listed below:
- Catalysis
- Organic Chemistry
- Fire retardant
- Synthesis of complex compounds
We will be discussing the important uses of magnesium bromide in catalysis, organic chemistry, fire retardant and synthesis industries in the article below:
Catalysis
- Magnesium bromide (MgBr2) works as a catalyst for the synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones.
- MgBr2 in combination with CH2Cl2 catalyzes hydrogenation reactions which makes a difference in the chirality of the molecule.
Organic chemistry
- The ethyl group combined with MgBr2 helps in the regiospecific analysis of triglycerols.
- MgBr2 can act as a Lewis acid in organic reactions.
Fire retardant
0.125 mol/L of hydrated MgBr2 can work as a fire-retardant when mixed with cotton.
Synthesis of complex compounds
First magnesium silylenoid was synthesised using MgBr2 by adding MgBr2 to lithium methyl bromosilylenoid.
Conclusion:
In the end, we can conclude that magnesium bromide (MgBr2) has limited uses and is mostly found to work as a catalyst. Some complex compound that was difficult to synthesize earlier can be easily synthesized using MgBr2.
