Krypton is a p-block element. It is a member of inert gases which belongs to group 18 of the periodic table. Let us elaborate on the electronic configurations of krypton.
Krypton (chemical symbol: Kr) is a noble gas with atomic number 36 and occurs in the elemental state in the atmosphere. The electron configuration of Kr indicates that it has fully-filled orbitals, which impart stability to the atom. It is almost chemically inert. Krypton is used in high-efficiency miners’ cap lamps.
In this article, let us discuss some facts about the electron configuration of krypton, the ground state orbital diagram, and its notation.
How to write Krypton Electron Configuration
The atomic number of krypton is 36, indicating that it has 36 electrons around the nucleus. The Aufbau principle, Pauli exclusive principle, and Hund’s Rule govern the order in which electrons are filled in the atomic orbitals of krypton.
Krypton Electron Configuration Diagram
The Krypton atom contains 36 electrons. The electronic configuration of the krypton is expressed in the form of the diagram as given below-
- 1s orbital present in the K orbit having minimum energy is filled first, with a maximum capacity of two electrons.
- After the 1s orbital, the 2s orbital is filled with a maximum capacity of two electrons.
- After the 2s orbital, the 2p orbital is filled with a maximum capacity of six electrons.
- After the 2p orbital, the 3s orbital is filled with a maximum capacity of two electrons.
- After the 3s orbital, the 3p orbital is filled with a maximum capacity of six electrons.
- After the 3p orbital, the 4s orbital is filled with a maximum capacity of two electrons.
- After the 4s orbital, the 3d orbital is filled with a maximum capacity of ten electrons.
- After the 3d orbital, the 4p orbital is filled with a maximum capacity of six electrons.
So, the diagram will be-
Krypton Electron Configuration Notation
The krypton electronic configuration notation is depicted as – [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p6. The krypton electronic configuration notation consists of a total of 36 electrons out of which 18 electrons are from the Argon gas configuration, 10 electrons in 3d, 2 electrons in 4s, and 6 electrons in 4p.
Krypton Unabbreviated Electron Configuration
The unabbreviated electronic configuration of krypton is depicted as –
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6
The krypton electron configuration consists of a total of 36 electrons which are filled as follows –
- Two electrons are present in 1s orbital.
- Two electrons in 2s orbital.
- Six electrons in 2p orbital.
- Two electrons in 3s orbital.
- Six electrons in 3p orbital.
- Ten electrons in 3d orbital.
- Two electrons in 4s orbital.
- Six electrons in 4p orbital.
Ground State Krypton Electron Configuration
The ground state electronic configuration of Krypton is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6.
Excited State of Krypton Electron Configuration
The excited state does not occur for krypton. Krypton has completely filled s and p orbitals which makes it highly stable and chemically inert. It rarely reacts with other elements.
Ground State Krypton Orbital Diagram
In the ground state of krypton, the first energy level (K-shell) has 2 electrons, the second energy level (L-shell) has 8 electrons, the third energy level (M-shell) has 18 electrons and the fourth energy level (N-shell) has 8 electrons. The orbital diagram of krypton is illustrated below:
Conclusion
Krypton is a monoatomic noble gas that is colorless and odorless. Kr has neither the tendency to gain electrons nor to lose electrons due to the stable arrangement of electrons in it. Krypton is used in several high-speed photography flash bulbs.
