Hydrogen fluoride (HF) and silver hydroxide (AgOH) are inorganic compounds. Let us discuss the reaction involved between HF and AgOH.
HF in an aqueous solution is known as hydrofluoric acid. HF is a colorless gas used as a main source of fluorine. HF boils at a much higher rate than other hydrogen halides. AgOH is a brown-colored solid, existing at low concentrations in a solution because it tends to change to silver oxide (AgO).
This article discusses the product formed from HF + AgOH, net ionic equation, equation reaction, type reversible reaction or Irreversible reaction are discussed in detail.
What is the product of HF and AgOH?
Silver fluoride (AgF) and water (H2O) are the product formed from the reaction HF and AgOH.
HF + AgOH –> AgF + H2O.
What type of reaction is HF and AgOH?
HF + AgOH is an acid-base reaction because a weak acid and a base react to form salt and water.
How to balance HF and AgOH?
- HF + AgOH –> AgF + H2O is the balanced chemical equation.
- The equation is balanced, as shown below. The table represents the number of moles of elements on the reactants and products side:
Elements | Reactants | Products |
---|---|---|
H | 2 | 2 |
F | 1 | 1 |
Ag | 1 | 1 |
O | 1 | 1 |
- The number of moles of all elements in both reactants and product sides is equal.
- The balanced equation is HF + AgOH –> AgF + H2O.
HF + AgOH titration
The titration is carried out between HF + AgOH to determine the quantity of silver as given below.
Apparatus used
Burette, conical flask, wash bottle, burette stand, volumetric flask, beakers.
Indicator
Methyl orange is the indicator used because the titration is between a weak acid and a weak base. A color change is noticed from red to orange and to yellow.
Procedure
- The burette is filled with standardized HF.
- AgOH is taken in a conical flask, and the measure is noted.
- The HF in the burette is made to add to the conical flask dropwise with constant stirring.
- After some time, a color change is observed, denoting the endpoint.
- Repeat the above steps for three more values and note the final result.
- Calculate the quantity of silver by using the formula V1S1= V2S2.
HF + AgOH net ionic equation
H+(aq) + OH–(aq) –> H2O(l) is the ionic equation of the reaction between HF and AgOH
- The phase of elements and the net ionic equation of the HF + AgOH reaction is as follows : H+(aq) + OH–(aq) –> H2O(l).
- The compounds are shown in their states present and their ionic form as shown below:
- H+(aq) + F–(aq) + Ag+(aq)+ OH– (aq)–> Ag+(aq)+ F– (aq) + 2H+(aq)+OH –(aq).
- The same element elements with equal charges are canceled, and the final net ionic equation is
- H+(aq) + OH–(aq) –> H2O(l).
Is HF + AgOH a conjugate pair?
- HF + AgOH forms an acid-base conjugate pair by donating a Proton from a strong acid and accepting a Proton from the base.
- The Conjugate pair of HF is F– , and the conjugate pair of OH– is H2O.
HF + AgOH intermolecular forces
The intermolecular forces present in The reaction between HF and AgOH are :
- The intermolecular forces present in HF are dipole-dipole interaction and hydrogen bonding.
- AgOH has weak ion-dipole interactions.
- AgF exhibits ion-dipole interactions.
- Hydrogen bond, dipole induced, dipole- London dispersion forces are present in the H2O molecule.
HF + AgOH reaction enthalpy
The reaction enthalpy of HF + AgOH is -39 kJ/mol.
- The table below represents the standard enthalpy of the formation of the molecule.
Molecules | enthalpy of formation(KJ/mol) |
---|---|
HF | -272.7 |
AgOH | -180.1 |
AgF | -206 |
H2O | -285.8 |
- Reaction enthalpy= (standard enthalpy of formation of products) – (standard enthalpy of formation of reactants).
Is HF + AgOH a buffer solution
HF + AgOH forms a buffer solution because HF is a weak acid, and buffer solutions are formed from a weak acid and its respective conjugate base. Buffer solutions do not change the pH nature.
Is HF + AgOH a complete reaction
HF + AgOH is a complete reaction because no more products are formed from the reaction after the formation of AgF.
Is HF + AgOH an exothermic or endothermic reaction
The reaction between HF and AgOH is exothermic because the reaction enthalpy value is negative.
Is HF + AgOH a redox reaction
The HF and AgOH are not a redox reaction because only the precipitate is formed, and a change in oxidation state is not observed.
Is HF + AgOH a precipitation reaction
HF and AgOH is a precipitation reaction because the AgF formed is a yellow-brown colored precipitate.
Is HF + AgOH a reversible reaction or an irreversible reaction
The reaction between HF and AgOH is irreversible because the products formed cannot be converted back to the reactants.
Is HF + AgOH a displacement reaction
The reaction between HF and AgOH is a double displacement because F displaces from HF to Ag, and OH gets displaced to Ag from AgOH.
Conclusion
AgF is used as a fluorinating and oxidizing agent. AgF reacts vigorously with water. HF is a highly corrosive compound and is widely used in oil refinery methods. AgOH has a high tendency to convert into AgO.
