Chlorine monofluoride is a class of inter halogen compound consisting of both chlorine and fluorine atoms. It is a volatile compound which is colorless at room temperature.
The uses of chlorine monofluoride are listed below:
- Fluorinating agent
- Chloro fluorinating agent.
- Production of chlorine gas.
Fluorinating agent
- Chlorine mono fluoride is used as a fluorinating agent. It is used for adding Fluorine to both metals and non metals.
- Chlorine monofluoride treated with tungesten and selenium gives corresponding tungesten hexafluoride and selenium tetrafluoride respectively.
Chloro fluorinating agent
- Chlorine mono fluoride is also used a chloro fluorinating agent. Usually chlorine and fluorine gets added into an organic compound having multiple bond like double or triple bond to give the products.
- Chlorine monofluoride reacts with carbon monoxide to form carbonyl chloridefluoride .
Production of chlorine gas
Chlorine monofluoride is used to produce chlorine gas. Chlorine is formed as a byproduct when ClF is used for fluorinating process.
Conclusion
In this article, we discussed the various uses of an interhalogen compound like chlorine monofluoride. It can be also called as chlorine fluoride with unique properties and reactions.
