While writing electronic configuration, that atoms total number of electrons must be known. Let us see how to write the electronic configuration of Arsenic (As).
As is present in the p block element in the 15th group and 4th period. It has the atomic number 33. Total 33 electrons are distributed in the different orbits of an As atom in a specific order which is represented by the electronic configuration of that atom.
In this article, we will briefly describe the As electronic configuration diagram, its unabbreviated, ground state, and excited state electronic configuration.
How to write arsenic electron configuration?
Step 1: Filling of electrons according to energy order of orbital.
According to Aufbau principal electrons are filled by the energy order of orbital by using (n+I) rule where n is the principal quantum number which refers to 1,2, 3, and I represent the azimuthal quantum number like s, p d, f for As the energy order is 1s<2s<2p<3s<3p<4s<3d<4p.
Step 2: Electrons are filling by following the Paulis exclusion principal
Each orbital has 2 electrons with different spin. As has 4 orbital these are s, p d & f orbitals which hold all electrons in an atom. s orbital has capacity of having 2 electrons, p orbital has 6 electrons capacity while d & f orbitals are having 10 and 14 electrons capacity.
Step 3: Arrangement of all electrons of As in their orbital
1st 2 electrons of As enters the 1s orbital next 2 enter into 2s orbital. Then 6 electrons enter into 2p orbital the 2nd orbital is now field. Further 2 electrons enter into 3s orbital then six enter into 3p orbital. 10 electrons enter into the 3d orbital Remaining 2 electrons filled into 4s and 3 electrons in 4p orbital of As.
Arsenic electron configuration diagram
According to Aufbau principle the electronic configuration of As can be represented are as follows.
Arsenic electron configuration notation
As electronic configuration notation is as follows
[Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p3.
As has 33 electrons out of them 18 electrons are taken from Ar gas configuration remaining electrons are kept the places in 3d 4s and 4p orbital.
Arsenic unabbreviated electron configuration
The unabbreviated electronic configuration of As atom is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p64s2 3d10 4p3. which denoted that
- 1s 2s 3s 4s orbital has 2 electrons.
- 2p 3p orbital has 6 electrons.
- 3d orbital has 10 electrons
- 4p orbital has 3 electrons.
Ground state arsenic electron configuration
Ground state electronic configuration of As is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s24p3.
Excited state of arsenic electron configuration
The excited state of the As electron configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s24p2 5s1. In excited state electronic configuration electrons tends to move from lower energy orbital to a higher energy orbital.
Ground state arsenic orbital diagram
Ground state As orbital diagram is as follows.
Arsenic 3– electron configuration
As3- electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d104p6. During bond formation, the last 3 electrons of the 4p orbital receive 3 electrons and turn into an As3- ion.
Conclusion
The electronic configuration of an atom is written on the basis of the filling of electrons according to energy levels of atomic orbital from lower to higher energy levels. As has 33 electrons which are filled according to the Bohr model or Aufbau principle.
